Taormina is a flourishing garden with figs, grapes, pomegranates, peaches, almond trees, purple anemones, hibiscus and salvia; it gives you the sense of the interaction between humanity and nature, feeling of wonder and of historical pain. Its historical roots are older than the Greeks’ arrival in Sicily. There’ is no doubt that the role of Taormina was significant for the island, thus Pliny the Elder, a great intender and connoisseur of good Italian wines, noted Taormina for its excellent wine. The present town is literally built on the ancient site, on a lofty hill which forms the projecting view to Etna and to the Ionian coast. The most remarkable monument preserved by Fortune is the Ancient Theatre that glorifies the monumental Greek and Roman architectural techniques. Exactly here, Goethe, dreaming about his beloved Anne Amalia, affirmed: “You see Taormina for the first time and you fall in love with it forever…”. Lady Florence Trevelyan found here her Sicilian “Hallinghton” inviting to Taormina Edward VII (evidently after the death of the Queen Victoria), the last Russian Zar Nikola II, Oscar Wilde, Nietzsche and Gabriele D’Annunzio. The presence of that woman is visible even now in the public garden “La Villa”, the space overwhelmed with exotic perfumes and offering the most cinematographic views to Etna and the coast.
